Advocate

The Nonprofit Center advocates for the nonprofit sector with elected officials, funders, community leaders and media. We work with you to ensure that key leaders understand the value of nonprofit organizations to the local and regional economy, as well as our significance to our quality of life.

The Florida state legislative session begins early this year, on January 10, 2012. We are interested in knowing what legislation you currently are tracking. Please comment with a description of your concerns, along with any other information as to how we may support you.

We are tracking funding for Healthy Start, family planning and infant health programs, as well as bill for potential pilot ing of Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) in Duval and Gadsden Counties.

Here in Clay County we are tracking:
    1. HB 639/SB 912 – Housing Trust Funds/The Sadowski Act
    2. FS 489.103 – The current statute provides an exemption to Habitat affiliates in obtaining a contractor’s license for new construction. We are seeking to amend that exemption, by extending the exemption for rehabilitations, too.
    3. Stimulus money coming into Florida for the Hardest Hit program – the Governor has halted this program to review and potentially decline the funding.

Gamble — we’ll add these to the list of bills the Nonprofit Center is tracking as well and send you e-lerts if we get notified there’s action.

While we’re talking about the Fl. Legislature, can anyone tell me more about S.556, a bill to require applicants for TANF assistance to first pay for and pass a drug test? I’m looking for an analysis of the impact on families/children.

Both the House and Senate Health Appropriations Committees restored the funding for homeless programs and the Office of Homelessness statute at DCF and provided an additional $366,000 for Homeless Transitions Programs. This means it is much more likely that this funding will make it through the budgeting process.

I plan to be back in Tallahassee on April 13, Homeless Advocacy Day to personally thank those who have supported this funding and emphasize the importance of continued support for both homeless prevention and homeless assistance. Please let me know if you or someone from your agency is able to make the trip.
